About the Songs

It is now too late to leave… Seek shelter as the fire approaches.

“Fire line” captures the bleak soundscape of a land taken by fire. It paints scenes of cut off roads, fleeing creatures and isolation. Written in a landscape of exposed sandstone crevices, charred trunks, bare canopies and lonely birds echoing through empty hills and valleys. It recounts impending danger, and lingering trauma for those who lived through the threat of fires throughout Australia. Zoe ends exposing the enduring loss for the families of those who were taken by the fires or joined the long waiting lists seeking mental health support to process the anxiety and fall out.

From the Ashes focusses instead on the regeneration, restoration and community work we witnessed in the wake of the fires. It is a celebration and a song of hope after enduring loss and destruction. These songs have an important place after Covid took the attention from the Bushfires, and the groundswell of work and support seen in communities in the year following.

From the Ashes out Now

From the Ashes focusses on the regeneration, restoration and community work we witnessed in the wake of the 2019 Bushfires. It is a celebration and a song of hope. These songs have an important place as Covid so quickly took the attention from the Bushfires, and the groundswell of work and support in communities afterward. Fire songs

See above…

From the Ashes Lyrics

White and black, dead and new
The earth is bare where tall trees grew
But I see the green coming through – making all things new.

New shoots rise where old limbs fell
Like the saints led out of hell
Creation wakes, it makes a way
This land will sing with birds again.

Fire up, there’s no time for you to mourn
What’s gone is slowly being reborn
Stand tall and open your weary eyes
From the ashes we will rise.

Fractured boulders, bare as bones
Scar the earth, all exposed
The mighty cedars, the gums and ferns
Are breaking through now, the bush returns.

Fire up, there’s no time for you to mourn
What’s gone is slowly being reborn
Stand tall and open your weary eyes
From the ashes we will rise.

Yes I see the rain rolling through – washing all things new…

From the ash, hope it prevails
For those whose eyes are off themselves
Fear flees when courage stands
Put on your boots now and lend a hand.

Fire up, there’s no time for you to mourn
What’s gone is slowly being reborn
Stand tall and open your weary eyes
From the ashes we will rise.

Fire Line Lyrics

The fire trails and the byways
The only ways to get anywhere
The smoke haze makes a dark day
Fill your lungs with ash and despair
And the prayers if the people
Cut off by the fire line

Homeless birds fly in dense clouds
Don't look back, there's no delay
Wildlife crosses treacherous highways
Gambling for another day
Hear the prayers of the people
Cut off by the fire line

The front line offer their lives up
Most return for another day
Haunting memories follow
They must learn to hold them all at bay
Hear the prayers of the heroes
The nightmares of broken heroes
Cut off by the fire line.

Little child with your mother
Cuddle close it was just a dream
Left behind by your father
Family torn apart at the seam
Hear the prayers of your loved ones
Cut off by the fire line.
